Q: What does it mean to “follow” someone?
A: When you follow someone, it means you’re interested in what they’re reading, watching or listening to. Following someone with similar tastes is one way to discover new items in the catalog you may want to borrow. If you’re familiar with X or Instagram, you already understand the idea of following someone.
When people you follow contribute to the catalog, you’ll get a notification in your newsfeed. Your newsfeed will show:
-
items they added to their shelves,
-
lists they created,
-
comments and ratings they added to specific titles,
-
lists or comments by others that they liked.
Q: How do I find people to follow?
A: Look for comments by other members on books or movies that you really enjoyed. For example, if you’ve recently borrowed and enjoyed a certain book, see if anyone else added positive comments to it, and follow them.
Q: If I follow someone, do they have to accept me before I get recommendations?
A: No, there is no approval process. The next time the person you’re following rates an item or adds a comment, that item will appear in your newsfeed.
Q: Does someone know if I follow them?
A: Yes. You can see who is following you if you log in to your account and then click My Profile on the menu. On your Profile page, look for the Followers link. It will show you the number of people following you. Click the link to see individual followers.
Q: I’m not comfortable with someone following me. Can I block them?
A: Yes. Keep in mind that people likely follow you because you have created an interesting list or written an insightful comment, and they want to know what else you like so that they can explore those items too. However, if you don’t want others to see what you like, you can make your Recent Activity feed private. Log in to your account, and then click My Profile on the menu. On your profile page, under My Recent Activity, click Make private.
